Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria — August 7, 2025 — Communities in Kebbi State witnessed a high-powered intervention on Thursday as the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Community Engagement (North-West), Hon. Abdullahi Yakasai, teamed up with the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Hajiya Zubaida Umar, for a full-scale flood simulation and sensitization exercise in Dukku, a riverine community on the outskirts of Birnin Kebbi.
The exercise comes in the wake of alarming forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which has listed 33 states as high-risk zones for excessive flooding in 2025. Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Jigawa — all in the North-West — are among the states expected to be worst hit.
The simulation was designed to show residents exactly how to respond when flood alerts are raised, with a strong emphasis on timely evacuation to avoid loss of life. Speaking to the gathering, Hon. Yakasai urged people to act fast when advised to move:
“When you are asked to evacuate, it is not to inconvenience you — it is to save your life and that of your loved ones. Don’t wait until the water is at your doorstep. Act early,” he said.
NEMA DG Hajiya Zubaida Umar reiterated the agency’s commitment to working closely with communities, adding that preparedness remains the most effective weapon against disaster.
This outreach forms part of the Presidential Community Engagement Drive, a nationwide effort to improve disaster readiness and protect lives before emergencies strike.
